Great portraits don’t just happen. They are the result of efforts on both sides of the camera. Your portraits will reflect the thought and effort you put into them. The more plans we make in advance, the more successful your finished portrait will be. A few things that you are in control of are: hairstyles, facial hair, nail polish, makeup, jewelry, sunburn and or tan lines and wardrobe selection.
CLOTHING
Simplicity is the key with clothing. Solid clothing—items without patterns, stripes or logos—work best. Prints and patterns can be very distracting in your images. Try to stay away from “loud” clothing or anything that is trendy. Stripes make people look bigger and wider. Dark colors are more flattering and slimming.
It is important to color coordinate in the same tonal range for family group sessions. Having one family member in too bright of clothing will make them stand out from the rest of the family.
Choose outfits that fit your personality and make you feel attractive, yet comfortable. You create harmony when you ensure all outfits are coordinated.
Considering where your portrait will hang in your home is also important when selecting the clothing and color of clothing for your portrait. Neutral colors look best. Avoid wearing short skirts or shorts, as they can make posing more difficult. Long flowing dresses and jeans make better selections.
Sleeveless or very short sleeves in shirts or tops are sometimes very unflattering in portraits and should be avoided. Also, unless you don’t mind people seeing all your curves, it’s best to avoid tight fitting tops.
Be sure your shoes compliment your clothing. Consider dark socks instead of white. However, bare feet also work in many cases.
MORE TIPS
Avoid sunburns and fake tans before your portrait session. They can make your skin look muddy and can be very difficult to retouch.
Don’t experiment with new hairstyles before your session. Love your hairstyle the day of your portrait session. Guys, if you're due for a haircut, go a week or two before the session. Don’t forget about shaving off the 5 o’clock shadow.
Want props in your photos? This can make your photographs unique. Some items to consider: picnic basket, wine glasses, a musical instrument or even your pet. Have your photo taken with your boat, sports car, plane or motorcycle.
